Job Purpose:

As the Design Manager, you will be an integral part of our OSRS team leadership and use your experience to guide the careers of those in Design and Content Creation.

As an experienced industry professional you will use your knowledge of game development and design to coach and mentor the designers to help them grow in their craft and be a positive influence for them daily.

As a member of the Old School RuneScape team, you will contribute to the unique personality of our team that makes creating OSRS fun for staff and players alike!
Working in close collaboration with the Old School Content Development Lead, Product Director and Executive Producer, and liaising closely with the Studio Senior Design Director you will create a clear path for our Sold School content development and design talent to realise their full potential, help develop clear workflows, processes and a unified approach that establishes the highest standards and build on our team values and culture.


  • Be a critical leader in ensuring the wellness and growth of our team
  • Partner with the Product Director, Lead Producer, and other leads to manage designers across the entire team and assist with roadmap iteration
  • Define and manage designer career paths within the team
  • Conduct regular one on ones with team leadership and designers
  • Mentor staff on creative processes, management, and leadership
  • Help the team with long-term strategic and tactical planning around career growth and staffing
  • Conduct performance reviews, coaching, and regular feedback for the team.
  • Design and implement best practices around staffing, interviewing, and career development
  • Administer staffing decisions that help achieve both the short- and long-term goals of the team
  • Partner with Human Resources for management related training
  • Coordinate with other game team managers for best practices and learnings

Requirements and skills:

  • Excellent collaborative, communication, and organization skills
  • A strong knowledge of modern Game Design, ideation/creative processes
  • Ability to handle a wide range of personnel issues including recruitment, career development, and conflict resolution
  • Ability to manage a large team of designers and technical designers in a dynamically changing game production environment.
  • Highly experience working with in agile Scrum, Kanban and traditional project management methodologies
  • Extensive experience of leading a design function and/or multiple design teams.
  • Industry experience in game design, production, or management positions
  • Multiple high-profile published titles on PC, mobile and console
  • Demonstrable skills as an inspirational leader and manager
  • The ability to identify risks and recommend appropriate mitigations and contingencies
  • Experience with managing agendas and schedules
  • A keen and genuine passion and appreciation of multipole game genres

Nice to have

  • Previous experience shipping of Live Ops/GAAS titles
  • Experience developing or an avid player for MMOs and/or retro game experiences!
  • Experience in both a design and a project management role on at least one game project (each) from inception to completion and ship
